How to Access Dept of Ed Remote Desktop
Prior to Connecting
Once you have received your PIV card, please call 202-708-4357, option 2, and then option 1 to activate your account and get a password from the Department of Education's Helpdesk.
Palo Alto GlobalProtect VPN
- Connect your Dept of Ed PIV card to the laptop.
- Click on the arrow in the taskbar near the clock to reveal all of the icons. Then click on the GlobalProtect icon.

- Select Get Started, then in the Portal field, enter the address gotowork.ed.gov and select Connect.


- Select the certificate from your PIV card (most likely the last one listed) and select OK. If you are unable to connect, select a different certificate and attempt to connect again.
- Enter your PIV card pin when prompted.

NOTE: If you get the error message ‘A valid client certificate is required for authentication. If the issue persists, please contact the Service Desk.
- Confirm the Global Protect client shows Connected.

- Search the start menu for Remote Desktop and launch the Remote Desktop client.
Subscribe to a Remote Desktop workspace by selecting one of the two available options.

To subscribe to a workspace via URL, select the Subscribe with URL option and paste https://rdweb.wvd.microsoft.com into the Email or Workspace:

NOTE: If Select your ED account to begin logging in. a pop-up is displayed saying We cannot connect you, please ensure that the Global Protect VPN is connected.
Select "Use another account" and then type in your Department of Education email address and password to log in.

After loading the list of ED Desktops will appear.

Alternatively, subscribing to a workspace via Email is also available, select the Subscribe option.
Launch the Remote Desktop client application.
Confirm GlobalProtect VPN is connected before proceeding.
View the Department of Education Workspace that you’ve subscribed to and launch the ED Std Desktop icon.

Select More Choices to login via PIV card:

Select Smart card credential and enter your pin.

The Remote Desktop will load with a Windows 10 workspace:

NOTE: If while authenticating with your PIV Card you receive an error message stating “A valid client certificate is required for authentication”, please email ServiceDesk@trexsolutionsllc.com for assistance.
